Kantha simply means “patched cloth”. This refers to, both, the ancient art of making something useful out of discarded items as well as the stitch itself.
We are excited to bring to you this ancient art of community hand stitching from India. Our reversible Kantha quilted throws are hand-stitched using 4-6 layers of high-quality, repurposed vintage cotton saris featuring bold and colorful prints.
All our throws are handcrafted by local women in West Bengal and Rajasthan and take 35 hours on average to create
Machine Washable
The Kantha stitches give the throws durability and strength. They are machine washable in cold to normal water with mild detergent. If time and space allow, handwashing and line drying ensure a better product life.
Reversible and Unique
Each Kantha throw is made with 4-6 layers of different vintage saris with distinct patterns and colors on each side. Each throw is one-of-a-kind and handcrafted by artisans in India.
Versatile and Cozy
Because the saris used to make the throws are vintage (i.e. washed multiple times), the throw is lightweight and soft. It complement’s the look of any room so use it where you like… On the couch, at a park, or by the fireplace!
What should you expect from a Kantha Quilt
Patches
Given the vintage nature of the fabric small imperfections may be found and are a part of the charm. If a preloved sari has a small tear, the cloth is simply patched before being used within the vintage kantha quilt.
Color Mismatching
In the traditional Indian kantha fashion, the colours and designs which are included in the quilts will not always be of a standard palette or theme. In fact, there’s often a range of wonderful colours and prints within one quilt.
Wear and Tear
Part and parcel of preloved fabric is that it will have lived a life before becoming a kantha quilt. You may find areas which have been worn more than others, though the fabric will not be physically torn. The throws are made by layering fabric, so in areas where the fabric has thinned, you will have the additional layers underneath peeking through, this adds to the character (and the softness).
